Tokimonsta - “Bright Shadows”

Jennifer Lee (a.k.a. Tokimonsta) is set to release a new EP, entitled Creature Dreams, via Brainfeeder on May 16/11. The EP is a series of warm but decidedly woozy pieces of music, the soundtrack to the oddest, most beautiful dreams you’ve ever had. From the bouncing bass-beds of Bright Shadows, the Cocteau’s-meet-LA-Beat of Darkest (Dim) (like Little Pleasures, featuring the exquisite vocals of Gavin Turek), on into Moving Forward (which sounds like the music R2D2 makes love to), the driving, relentless beat of Day Job, this is an EP suffused with both warmth and creativity.

Teebs - “Pretty Poly”

L.A. producer (and card-carrying Brainfeeder member) Teebs posted this track to his to his Tumblr, and it’s a weightless number that appears to incorporate a version of “Pretty Polly”, an old murder ballad.

Matthewdavid - “All You’ll Never Know”
![]()
The head honcho of Leaving Records “Mathewdavid” (home to Sumsun, Ras G, Dem Hunger a.o) totally killed it with his sprawling ‘Livephreaxxx!!!!’ transformation of Sun Araw, but these four tracks are far more concise gobfulls of his sound. The title track “International” features the vocals of Atlanta’s Dog Bite hovering in a slow maelstrom of spiritual Ethiojazz samples, humming bottom end and dynamically tumbled percussion, while ‘All You’ll Never Know’ seems trapped forever in a fractal 2 second loop and ‘Motion Trouble’ does that crazily expanding/condensed head pressure thing with skittering, sub-jungle breaks for added madness. ‘Leaving/Gone’ tips out on a pastoral/oceanic psyche vibe, like Carlos Niño sailing into the horizon in a leaky coracle. Excellent. Available April 18th on Brainfeeder.
TOKiMONSTA - “Breath on my Contacts”

Here is a little bootleg mix from LA’s brainfeeder very own TOKiMONSTA, doing her own version of Telepopmusik’s track “Breath”! Enjoy!

The Gaslamp Killer - “MonsterFromTheUnderground”

“Death Gate” marks the return of Los Angeles-based producer and DJ William Bensussen, otherwise known as The Gaslamp Killer. The new five track EP, on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, is a dark, bleak creation that is unmistakably part of the GLK’s universe. Describing the record, he states “Death Gate is about exploring the places between life and death, and the shattering of inner journeys that wait for us there.” Get it Now!

Teebs - “Anchor Stream”
![]()
Teebs debut full-length, Ardour, comes out on October 9 via the Brainfeeder label, ”Anchor Steam” finds Teebs reaching into his usual bag of tricks by employing varied percussion and washed-out melodies, but the song also sports a Balearic vibe and a sped-up tempo that’s more indicative of house and techno than the LA beat scene. Yet he handles the increased bpm deftly; it’s always been evident than Teebs’ music sounded great in headphones, but “Anchor Steam” leads us to believe that he might also have a future on the dancefloor.

Teebs - “Arthur’s Birds”
Flying Lotus has described Teebs’ music as sounding “the way ‘Avatar’ looks.” And those familiar with the 23-year-old visual artist and musician’s canvasses would be prone to concur.
His first single for his Brainfeeder debut LP, “Ardour,” expands on these ideas, and illustrates why it’s one of the most anticipated records within the Los Angeles beat community. Since moving from New York several years ago, the producer-artist born Mtendere Mandowa has been one of the city’s brightest prospects, a member of the My Hollow Drum collective, a frequent Dublab guest and a Low End Theory staple. Additionally, BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs included one of his tracks on her “Wild Angels” compilation.
“Ardour” is slated to be released Oct. 19th. It figures to be worth marking your calendar in advance.
